La pauvreté (poverty)
‘De Jean Coste’ is an essay by the French poet and essayist Charles Péguy written in about 1901. On the back of the picture the artist has written “A moins d’avoir du génie un homme riche ne peut imaginer ce qu’est la pauvreté (Preface De Jean Coste) Peguy 15 Juin 1901” which roughly translates as “Unless he possesses genius a rich man cannot imagine what poverty actually is.”
