Pen-and-ink with wash, 282mm x 416mm, 1944

Damien de Molokai (1840-1889) was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium, recognised for caring for people with leprosy. He contracted the disease himself and died in what is now the United States. Molokai is an island of Hawaii (probably where the picture is set). Father Damien, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, was canonised by the Pope in 2009.
