La Phoebe (from Heureux les Humbles)
Drypoint, 10 January 1945

Heureux les Humbles is a collection of stories by the French author Jean de La Varende (1887-1959), published in 1942. La Varende was a traditionalist in the Catholic faith, as was to some extent Françoise Wauters (later Françoise Taylor). His stories reveal an attachment to rural traditions and ideals of the past: lands inhabited by peasants, priests and gentry—a harmonious hierarchy with lords as 'peasants of the king' and peasants as family of the lord. The stories were originally published in newspapers and include La Phoebe, Monsieur de Polizer and Les Pèlerins d'Argentan.
